Who am I?

Originally from Minnesota, I migrated first to Chicago where I attended The College of the University of Chicago. At the UofC I studied math with a concentration in computer science. (I worked my way through school as a data analyst/office manager/computer guru for the Elementary Component of the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project).

I next moved on to Madison, WI for graduate work in computer sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I worked with Anne Condon, the nicest research advisor in the world. I worked on several topics, eventually writing a dissertation on practical implementations of parallel graph coloring algorithms.

As I was finishing my dissertation, I organized a softball team for St. Paul's, the campus catholic center. To make a long, pleasant story short, I started dating Margaret Martin, the team catcher, on July 26 -- three days before my defense and nineteen days before I left Madison for good.

After Madison, I headed south to Cincinnati where I am now a Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at Xavier University. Margaret came to visit me for about ten days but then she headed off for Sri Lanka as a Peace Corps volunteer. We decided a long distance (10000 miles) relationship was worth it and got married eight months or so after she returned from her three year tour of duty.

That softball team nearly maximized its possible marriages, by the way. Out of the four unmarried men and five unmarried women on the team, three married couples resulted. Whoooo.

Margaret and I now have a son, Carl, who really likes Alice in Wonderland, Bionicles, Geometric Solids, and writing/illustrating his own stories (at last telling, he wants to be an Architect since it combines art, math and science), and a daughter, Hope, who likes Care Bears, Batman, Spider-Man, Sponge-Bob, climbing really high, riding her bike really fast, and laughing (she wants to be an astronaut and plans to go to Pluto though she's willing to go the moon first).
